ABS August 2012 Challenge 2 by The Beading Yogini

Prepare to come about… that’s about all I can recall from my brief sailing days on the Narragansett Bay.

But, if you are going to remember one lesson from sailing,

that’s a pretty important one to recall unless you want to go for a swim or get knocked out.

I do love the ocean and the beach, and here I am, living in the Mojave desert. I have tons of beach, but no water.

I always like to look at the glass as half full.

ABS AUGUST 2012 Challenge1 by The Beading Yogini

I kept it simple for the Art Bead Scene August challenge with a small fabric and wire wrap bracelet using some black bailing wire (you can find this at the local hardware store), grey fabric cotton yarn, a few metal spacers, one red seed bead and some beautiful labradorite beads. I like how the labradorite reminds me of the reflection of sunlight on the ocean water. This bracelet is light weight and comfortable to wear.

Vintaj “Dragonfly Pool” Challenge August 2012

Written By: admin - Aug• 06•12

One evening last week, near dusk, my friend Sarah and I both commented about seeing a cluster of dragonflies in the cactus garden. You’d think the Mojave desert an unusual place to find dragonflies because of the lack of water, but that’s not the case. The desert has many types of dragonflies that can only be found in the Southwest. In fact the largest dragonflies in North America are found in the desert; Giant Darners are six inches long. I see them often in the summer months, but not dozens of them! I wanted to create a piece for the challenge using multiple dragonflies.

“Recently I saw a cluster of dragonflies in the cactus garden near dusk.

I created a necklace for the challenge using multiple dragonflies,

reflecting the spirit of dusk in the desert twilight with just a bit of iridescent metallic color.”

Materials used:

I used the Vintaj Big Kick and the Vintaj DecoEmboss Dragonfly Pond to make a circular backing for a Vintaj Natural Brass Art Deco Dragonfly Pendant. I also incorporated smaller Vintaj Dragonfly Brass Links and a small Vintaj Dragonfly Charm. C-Lon cord, plastic links, round brass links, seed beads, twin seed beads, Magatama beads, antiqued brass chain, round copper link, oval brass jumprings, oval brass split-rings, and lobster claw clasp.

Jewelry Designs from Nature Challenge Blog Hop

Written By: admin - Jul• 17•12

Welcome to my garden…  that’s my theme for the Jewelry Designs from Nature Challenge. The generous and talented Heather Powers, aka Humblebeads had a little lottery earlier this summer and I was one of the lucky designers selected to work with one of her polymer clay pendant beads.

Designs From Nature Challenge 2012

I work at a cactus nursery, so the garden theme works for me. In the very hot summer months (Mojave Desert), I am often up at dawn and out watering plants. It needs to be done before it gets too steamy (both for my sake, and the plants too!) Not much dew out here in the desert, but I do get to see some amazing birds, critters low to the ground, spiders and other flying insects. Not to mention some awesome cactus flower blooms.

Heather sent along this poem for inspiration:

A sepal, petal and a thorn

Upon a common Summer’s morn –

A flask of Dew – A Bee or two-

A breeze – a caper in the trees –

And I’m a rose!

(Emily Dickinson)

Here’s what I came up with for the challenge:

Nature Challenge Necklace by The Beading Yogini

Since I really enjoy a good challenge, I decided I needed to master the technique of micro-macrame leaves and incorporate that into the design process.  Needed to make the holes in the wooden beads a little bigger to be able to fit two cords through. Task completed with the help of my trusty Dremel. Always a bonus to be able to play with tools.

Also decided to mess around and make a pair of earrings to go along with this necklace. I repurposed a broken pair of bronze earrings by wrapping them in silk sari ribbon. Added a red button, a lampwork headpin and did a little sewing of the ribbon.

I made this macrame necklace a few weeks ago and I’m just getting around to taking photos.

Here it is, quick and easy.

That brilliant Buddha Pendant is by Swedish artist Birgitta Lejonklou (Create With Spirit).

I added a few Tim Holtz metal components as a reminder to LISTEN.

Hard to believe that this was inspired by a Picasso?

I didn’t know that Picasso even painted anything other than those crazy abstract looking works.
This selection did inspire me to work with color combinations that I would never choose of my own accord.
I decided to use some of the colors from the palette that Brandi Hussey provided. For some reason the print on the acrobats tights and those chalk white faces kept popping into my brain and the here’s the outcome from those images. Materials used: C-lon cord, metal findings, seed beads, bone beads, one of my etched lampwork beads for the center focal, and some glass face beads. Busy as this bracelet looks, it’s kinda’ growing on me. It is a comfortable wear, but it’s going to the 7000 bracelets for hope project. See what others are creating this month on the flickr ABS group. And thanks for stopping by.

June 2012 - nighthawk palette 3 Brandi Hussey Art Bead Scene

I’ve always liked this painting by Edward Hopper

Nighthawks (1942)

Can’t everyone relate to the late night, cheap diner experience?

I think we’ve all been there and done that at some point in our development.

Who knew, even the Simpson’s had an episode featuring this cheap diner backdrop?

Enough talk, here’s the jewelry design for the month.

My sister has a birthday this month and I’m hoping she will like this gift coming her way.

Materials used: assorted seed beads, C-Lon cord, copper chain, jumprings, clasp, silk sari cord, embroidery thread

,lampwork glass headpins, lucite flowers, and a Lipstick Ranch rustic “sisters” charm.

I opted to work with Brandi Hussey’s Color Palette 3 for this months Art Bead Scene Challenge.
