Challenge of Music Blog Hop

Written By: admin - Feb• 29•12

I was really hard pressed to choose a favorite song, a favorite artist, or even a favorite music genre for this design challenge. I’m one of those types who like almost every type of music; with the exception of hard core rap. I enjoy listening to alternative, blue grass, folk, classical, R & B, and on and on.

I do have a favorite live music genre and that is kirtan. Some folks know this as “yogi” music. It is a “devotional” caller/response style of music and I love it because of the joyous audience participation and trance like quality that can often times be slipped into when attending a kirtan. It is also said that the Sanskrit language and musical style of the ancient yogis affects the energy centers of the body, both the physical and the subtle body. The name for this is Nada Yoga, or the yoga of sound. It is thought that sound can carry divine vibrations and is used to reach a state of peace and silence.

But surprise, Nada Yoga is not what inspired my design for this Challenge of Music Blog Hop. As I said earlier, I do have varied music tastes. My felted, micro macrame, turquoise necklace was inspired by the tune “Throw Me A Rope” by KT Tunstall. A melancholy tune, evoking very strong emotions for me. Emotions of loss, feelings of emptiness and sorrow, but perhaps also of hope. This song is a bit on the dark side, but also hauntingly beautiful and tender. “”’Throw Me a Rope”'” was the first single released by KT Tunstall. It was released as a  single in 2004 and was limited to 300 copies. It is on her 2006 acoustic album, KT Tunstall’s Acoustic Extravaganza.

Music Challenge Side 2 by The Beading Yogini

I want you between me and the feeling I get when I miss you

But everything here’s telling me I should be fine

So why is it so, above as below

When I’m missing you every time

Music Challenge Side 1 by The Beading Yogini

I got used to you whispering things to me into the evening

We followed the sun and its colors and left this world

It seems to me that I’m definitely hearing the best that I’ve heard

So throw me a rope to hold me in place

Show me a clock for counting my days down

‘Cause everything’s easier when you’re beside me

Come back and find me, ’cause I feel alone

Music Challenge Side 5 by The Beading Yogini

And whenever you go, it’s like holding my breath under water

I have to admit that I kinda like it when I do

Oh, but I’ve gotta be unconditionally unafraid

Of my days without you

So throw me a rope to hold me in place

Show me a clock, for counting my days…down.

‘Cause everything’s easier when you’re beside me

Come back and find me

Whenever I’m falling, you’re always beside me

Come back and find me

‘Cause everything’s easier when you’re beside me

Come back and find me, ’cause I feel alone

“Throw Me a Rope” as written by Katie Tunstall

I’ve heard KT’s music, and I love it, but I’d never heard this song before. Thanks for sharing it — it’s sad, but very beautiful.

  7. This is so incredibly beautiful and soothing, just like the song (enjoyed that introduction to KT Tunstall immensely). I love the turquoise and the fringe and the textures. The reversible aspect is such a brilliant way to make this~to be completely open and seen or a bit of a mystery. It flows perfectly with your music selection!

  8. Holly says:

KT Tunstall is an amazing artist and singer – her music is as touchy-feely as you can get for music. And I think that your necklace with it’s incredibly texturality (is that a word??) are the perfect visual for this song. What an amazing focal and necklace!!

  9. That is flipping amazing. How did you learn micro-macrame???

    • admin says:

Nervous hands and a curious mind. Learned some basic macrame when I was just a kid. There are several good books out there and some great youtube video’s. It also helps if you already have some wire wrapping skills. Believe it or not, I am somewhat directionally impaired. Can just barely read a map and my yoga students always laugh with me when I mix up left and right in my classes!

  10. Love the earthy feel of your necklace AND that you can wear it two ways. What a great design!
    {Hugs!}

  11. Such a wonderful piece! Bravo!

  12. Oh this is just beautiful! I absolutely LOVE it!

  13. Beth says:

Wow – love it. The macrame is awesome! You captured the song perfectly!

  14. Cynthia says:

I love both sides of your necklace. The turquoise… the fringe… the macrame is all very fabulous!

  15. Shaiha says:

I love your necklace. It is so fitting. You also opened my eyes to the use of macrame. I never would have thought of a macrame bezel but I like so much more then a beaded one.

  16. Jennifer says:

Absolutely incredible piece and song! Thank you so much for sharing!!

  17. Marcie says:

I love the natural look of this piece. I’m a sucker for turquoise and I think you’ve framed it beautifully here. wonderful piece!

  18. Jenny says:

First – the piece is lovely. I think the macrame adds a symbolic element , entangled, entertained, maybe knotted or seemingly confused, but order overall. The fringe feels a bit like tears that you can wear out, or in at the heart. Suits the song really well.

  19. Beth Hemmila says:

I am a huge lover of kirtan too! I love that you chose turquoise as the stone to represent this song and this particular line is incredibly powerful for me today: “We followed the sun and its colors and left this world.” Thank you for sharing this song that I didn’t know by an artist I love, and allowing me to see it through your artistry. Namaste! Beth

  20. Ema says:

Absolutely beautiful! I love how you incorporated “the rope” into your piece. I am simply in love with your creation. I too am a yogini, Deva Premal is one of my favorites. I almost created a piece based on one of her songs but ultimately went with my first idea. I thank you for some new music to listen to as well.

  21. maneki says:

Very nice necklace! I like the dangling fringe on the focal and the colours are so earthy. Great textures with the fiber. The clasp adds a subtle message of love. Great job!

  22. I had to go back and play the song while I looked more deeply at your design, Miss Cece. It is so soft and lilting this song. I can feel the energy that is running through this piece. The tactile nature of your work is really beautiful. I would want to be constantly touching the felted part and playing with the dangles. I was especially drawn to the line “so throw me a rope to hold me in place” and I totally get that from your micro macrame. It is so otherworldly, as if some ancient talisman has been unearthed. This is just a beautiful piece and a lovely inspiration.

I admit that I don’t know anything about the kirtan and it would be intriguing to me to see how that would translate. You have a marvelous gift for interpretation Miss Cece, and I am delighted that you joined me on this journey of sound and magic!
    Enjoy the day!
    Erin

  23. What a beautiful and intricate piece that truly compliments the music you chose. I can’t stop looking at all of the elements you included in your design – so much movement – just gorgeous!

  24. Pixiloo says:

Wow. What a stunning necklace. I love your macrame. I also like KT Tunstall’s music. She has a wonderful voice and you captured her song perfectly.

  25. Macreme is very meditative, like yoga. The piece is amazing, and I love it inverted, fringe up. I would love to touch it, it looks so soft and sturdy. Great and wonderful piece you have created here!!!

  26. Lola says:

Absolutely stunning! The softness … the detail … the stones … the movement … gorgeous!

  27. Therese says:

Beautiful necklace I love how you combined the felting with the micro macrame just gorgeous!

  28. What a unique and powerful piece! Really wonderful design elements. It has a very “one with the earth” feel to it. Love the felting too.

  29. Bobbie says:

There is a lot of lovely work in this blog hop, but yours is the first piece that actually made me catch my breath when I saw it – WOW! Such a fabulous combination of materials, textures, and techniques. I love every single thing about it!

  30. admin says:

Thanks all for stopping by and the kind comments. This challenge was really fun and brought back warm memories for me. The piece is dedicated in memory of my best friend Scott. He was an excellent vocalist, loved to camp, taught me to play the guitar and that life is short… so play hard folks!

  31. Birgitta says:

    Stunning !! of course 😉

  32. amy says:

Really stunning and unique! Love this one too!

  33. Love this piece. Your macrame is amazing. I can’t conceive of doing anything like it. I also love Kirtan music — especially Snatam. I have a bunch of her CDs and play them all the time. My daughter is both a yoga teacher and a yoga teacher trainer and introduced me many years ago. One of the most inspiring nights ever was when we saw Diva Premal and Miten in concert at Golden Bridge Yoga in LA. Several of their songs brought me to tears!
