October ABS Challenge

Written By: admin - Oct• 09•11

Art Bead Scene Monthly Challenge for October. Initially I wasn’t too thrilled with the selection. I even considered just passing on this round. But, I really like the color palette, so I reconsidered.

Then, the other afternoon I had a few hours to play and decided to crawl youtube for videos of hedgehogs. I’ve never seen a hedgehog up close and in the flesh. For a rodent like critter, they are pretty charming. Before I knew it, the clay was out and I had myself a little critter or two curing on my table. Here’s my first attempt. Perhaps a bit too rat like?

Here’s my second attempt. More like it.

I’ll confess that I did take two art courses in college way back when, an art history class and a sculpting class. I had forgotten what a blast sculpting clay is. Just for fun, maybe I’ll try a third attempt later this month. But for now, I’m going ahead with this necklace featuring the hedgehog bead as a focal, tiny lampwork glass beads knotted with C-Lon cord and finished with a side toggle.

We have lots of those in Sweden (IRL) and I have some in the garden almost every Year.. I even have been carrying them around (with gloves on) as a child..And I am going to make some in ceramic or polymer also ( Im just a bit slower than You in the start…)

Thank you. I can’t wait to see what you make with the clay. Your pendants are so nice. Do the hedgies tear up the garden or eat the plants? The potted succulents on my porch have been getting decimated and disappearing. Something mighty hungry is getting into them. Rabbits? Rodents? Not hedgehogs for sure!

Well, I’ve never been a scupltor, but this sweet little guy makes me want to try. I just love your necklace. All the components come together so nicely to represent the theme and colors of the ABS October Challenge.

Your hedgehog is adorable and the necklace is very interesting! I love how you used chain, beads, knotting, and a unique toggle, too.

  7. Too fun! Love his facial expression! And your first attempt first looks like a cute wood mouse. And great design with the necklace – your components and design compliment your hogtie without overwhelming him.

  8. Interesting to see your process. Yes, you’ll have to save that first one for the challenge featuring the Pied Piper or something. : ) Love the finished necklace and texture on your little hedgie.

  9. The second hedgehog is adorable. Such talent you have. I was also inspired to you a side clasp for this months challenge.
